| | Bulimia Nervosa (BN) is a serious and difficult-to-treat eating disorder that's more prevalent than Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Bulimia Nervosa is defined by food binges or recurrent episodes of significant overeating accompanied by a sense of loss of control. The affected person then uses various methods -- such as vomiting or laxative abuse -- to prevent weight gain.
Some people with Bulimia Nervosa also may have suffered Anorexia Nervosa. While there is little research on treatments for teens with BN, a randomized controlled trial comparing family-based treatment (the Maudsley Approach) with supportive individual psychotherapy has produced promising results.
The study was conducted by Daniel le Grange, PhD and his team at the University of Chicago's Eating Disorders Program. In June 2008, Maudsley Parents talked about Bulimia Nervosa and its treatment with Dr le Grange.
